Johnson & Johnson Vision, part of Johnson & Johnson MedTech, has enhanced its sustainability by eliminating plastic from delivery pouches.

The company scrapped the plastic pouches that are currently placed on the outside of European ACUVUE deliveries.

By placing delivery notes inside orders without external packaging, Johnson & Johnson Vision will save nearly 10t of plastic across Europe annually.

Vision Care EMEA area vice-president Jacqueline Henderson said: “At Johnson & Johnson Vision, we’re dedicated to reducing our environmental impact and finding sustainable solutions. This is why we’ve made the decision to optimise our packaging by removing plastic pouches and using stickers instead.

“It may seem like a small step, but it’s significant; even minimal changes to day-to-day processes can make a huge impact in the long run and help contribute to a healthier planet.”

The latest move will support Johnson & Johnson’s goal to reach net-zero by 2030. It will be implemented in the UK in the next two months.

The business recently published its strategy to reduce its carbon footprint and waste, and limit the use of natural resources.

In line with this mission, Johnson & Johnson Vision introduced renewable and energy efficient programmes, saving 42,000t of CO₂ annually.

The business also switched to 100% renewable electricity this year, three years ahead of the original schedule.

In August last year, Johnson and Johnson Vision collaborated with packaging firm Amcor to develop a proprietary lidding technology for use in combination healthcare products.

The packaging solution features a lidding solution that can endure heat sterilisation, without hindering drug uptake into the packaging.
