Breaking News: Pritzker Expected In Mount Prospect For Memorial Day

The following Speak Out! messages appear in May 25-26, 2022 editions of the Journal & Topics.

Hi, just wanting to know, I don’t see anything in the paper about Barnaby’s in Des Plaines. What is going on with Barnaby’s? Are they going to close it permanently? Are they going to reopen? What’s going on with Barnaby’s? Please find out and let us know.

When are we going to stop all the stops? This is in response to Steve Chapman’s column. Thursday, 4/21. You have to understand that we need law enforcement or do you want to revert back to all the early western days when everyone was packing a 44? Let’s wake up. Accept law enforcement. Yes, we need qualified candidates. And yes we need to support law enforcement. Thank you.

Since the mandates for wearing masks have been lifted somewhat, boy it’s so nice going to the stores, or the restaurants or just walking down the street and having people smile at you again. I do, however, wonder whether the manufacturers and suppliers of the masks are smiling also. I doubt it.

Oh, yes, hello. I have a major complaint. I wrote in about three, four or five times about the person who was complaining and they said they couldn’t believe that the city filed a complaint with the ICC or whatever because of the train horns, but they didn’t know what they were talking about. They weren’t just tooting at pedestrians by the Metra. It was the freight trains by Rand and Graceland blowing people out of bed because they thought the gates weren’t going to work because it was damp outside. Yeah, how stupid is that? We know we have train tracks. I’ve been living here 22 years. Like I said, that person didn’t know what they were complaining about. The city complains for the people because they were blowing the horn 100 times more than they should have because they were worried the gates weren’t working right. Anyplace else in the world, they would have been fixed right away. They wouldn’t have blasted people out of bed like they were crazy.

I’m responding to “Stats Alarming” where the writer says that we don’t need the same amount of guns and also says it’s alarming that our very weak federal gun laws keep the never ending cycle of gun violence in tack. My suggestion would be to enforce the laws on the book. The other thing he says is that we do not need…it says your reader asks for a definition of assault weapons. Federal and most state laws define them as semi-automatic rifles. No, they do not. AR-15 style rifles are not assault weapons or assault rifles. An assault rifle is fully automatic, a machine gun. Automatic firearms have been severely restricted from civilian ownership since 1934. If someone calls an AR-15 style rifle an assault weapon, then they have been duped by an agenda.

This is concerning the Journal & Topics recent story about new storm sewers going under Northwest Highway at the S-curve and that the road will be closed for five months there. It’s very scary to think they will be disturbing the terrain underneath that old wooden bridge. Doubt they’ll even replace the part that’s rotted and ready to cave in.

The amount of people I have seen waiting for traffic to pass on Touhy between Dee and Western has me worried someone may get hit one day by accident. Many cars zip through this area without thinking twice that a pedestrian may be waiting to cross. I think the city of Park Ridge should consider a crosswalk with lit signage between the lights so people can safely cross without having to walk to one of the main roads. Just a thought.

This is a little late to mention but better late than never as the saying goes. Kudos to everyone that had part in the decision to install a light at the intersection of Forest Avenue and Lee Street. It has made traffic flow so much better and I feel safer turning and just driving in general through this intersection. I was always nervous approaching this area when I needed to turn or when someone else needed to turn. I am very surprised that (to my knowledge) no major accidents happened here. I felt heard by the city of Des Plaines as I too was someone that contacted the city in regard to this issue. Every time I drive through this intersection, I can’t help but feel just a little proud that when we speak up, things do actually happen around here. Thank you again Des Plaines.

What’s going on with the post office? I haven’t received mail in over a week. This isn’t the first time either. Longest was two weeks. When I do get mail it’s not even my address. They need to get their act together and all we see is these mail ladies on their phones talking.

Who’s ‘Baby’ Is It?

Of course you’re being replaced. By your own children. Somewhere down the line they will pull the plug on you and take everything you own. Just think for a moment about that no good son-in-law of yours driving your baby around town after you’re gone — your baby being a 1966 Ford Mustang. Here’s my replacement theory: he’s going to really enjoy himself in that car of yours.

By now, anyone who has paid even the tiniest bit of attention to the news knows that Donald Trump was determined to hold on to the presidency by any means possible. We all heard the recorded phone call in which he told the election authorities in Georgia that they must “find” 11,800 more votes to allow him to win in that state. We know that Trump and his team were planning strategies to stay in power even before the votes were counted, clearly determined to keep the presidency no matter the will of the voters. The evidence coming out of the January 6 investigations show us a team surrounding Trump that helped plan the insurrection, and we’ve read the Eastman memo, which outlined a legally dubious method to overturn the election. I understand people may not support President Biden, and that is of course their prerogative. But anyone that still supports Trump, and thinks that he should be leading our country, clearly does not truly believe in the rule of law, or in a democracy led by the people. If you are going to keep the Trump sticker on your car, feel free to do so, but then you should take down your American flag, stop wearing your veteran cap, and by no means do you get to call yourself a patriot.

As reported in the May 11, 2022 Journal, the District 26 Board of Education approved Jodi Megerle as the next superintendent. Who? After hiring a search firm at a cost to taxpayers of $14,500 plus expenses, the board chose a current employee, Megerle, from a group of more than 30 candidates. Why? When hired by D26 in 2019, Mrs. Megerle replaced the retiring head of special services. She obtained her doctorate in 2020. Prior to her hire at D26, she was principal for five years at a middle school. Her employment history includes being an assistant principal, principal, and a special education teacher. There is no experience as a superintendent of a school district. Someone who has served as a superintendent has some of the knowledge one can only have by having occupied the role of superintendent. Managing budgets at a middle school level is not the same as budgets at the superintendent level. Managing personnel is not the same at the superintendent level compared to one school. A superintendent has to have the ability and knowledge to work with the board of education. What is the vision of D26? Was it looking for someone to create a new vision and bring this district forward, or just settle for the same old practices? The board of education should have just skipped the search firm process and saved the district $14,500 plus expenses, as this appears to have been an inside job all along.

Why is there only one Dairy Queen in all of Des Plaines? And that one is almost four miles from downtown.

My wife and I wanted to go to dinner in Chicago with two other couples and suggested a few restaurants. They said absolutely “not.” They feared for what could happen and didn’t want to chance it. So we went to Jameson’s instead.

“Niles-Maine Library Staff Complains of Fatigue”. You have to be kidding…right? Is this some kind of joke headline? It must be really hard putting books back up on the shelves. What next? “Niles-Maine Library Staff Complains of Environment Being Too Quiet?” The drama never ends.

The sidewalk on the south side of Rand on the bridge over the river and its approach is broken with loose pieces of concrete. It is extremely dangerous for someone to ride it and due to the narrow width, leaves the railing and river on one side and the heavy traffic on Rand, moving at the limit of 45 or more. It is heavily traveled, connecting to the Trail. If there is a jurisdictional issue between the city, county or state, fix it. Then work that part out. Before there is a child or adult killed because they lost control of their bike on the bridge.
